The Co-Chairs of the Peoples` Democratic Party (HDP) Selahattin Demirtas (L) and Figen Yusekdag (R) smile during a press conference after initial results of theTurkish parliamentary elections, in Istanbul, Turkey, 07 June 2015.

The deciding factor in Sunday’s parliamentary elections in Turkey was the emergence of the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party, or HDP, Washington Post’s Ishaan Tharoor writes in an article on the implications of voting results.

HDP came in fourth with about 12% of the vote, mostly won at the expense of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his ruling Justice Development Party, or AKP, which lost its majority in parliament.

Although AKP is still the biggest party in Turkey, it suffered its worst result since 2002, “an astonishing turn of events for a party that has dominated Turkish politics for almost a decade and a half,” reads the article which you can read here.
