Partial Results of Turkey's Election Give Ruling AKP 43.6%, HDP Just Above 10% Barrier

Partial results of Sunday’s general election in Turkey give the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) 43.6% of the vote, Reuters reported.

The partial results, announced by CNN Turk, suggest AKP may find it difficult to rule without a coalition, according to the newswire. AKP needs to secure 276 of the 550 seats in parliament to form a single-party government.  

With just under two-thirds of ballots counted, the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) has won 10.6% of the vote, just above the 10%threshold needed to enter parliament.

With vote counting still unfinished in the biggest cities, results could change significanly, Reuters noted.

If AKP wins at least 330 of the 550 seats in the one-chamber Grand National Assembly it could call a national referendum to change the constitution in a way that could turn Turkey into a presidential republic with far-reaching powers for President Recep Erdogan.

If AKP wins 367 seats, it could pass constitutional amendments without a referendum.
