Prosecutors from the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) launched an investigation against Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta.

Ponta is suspected in conflict of interests in his capacity as Prime Minister, AGERPRES news agency reports.

The DNA opened the procedure of notification of the Chamber of Deputies, which has to approve the criminal investigation as Ponta is also a deputy.

The prosecutors ordered the investigations on allegations of forgery, continued complicity to tax evasion and money laundering.

The case concerns the legal counseling for the energy companies of Turceni and Rovinari, allegedly perpetrated by Ponta when he was a lawyer.

Later the prosecutors established that the investigation should be extended to include three counts of conflict of interests after he became prime minister.

As he was leaving the DNA offices after hearing on Friday, Ponta confirmed that he was officially a suspect.

Shortly after, the Romanian PM posted pictures of several documents on his Facebook page, which according to him proved his innocence.

Before Ponta's hearing at the DNA, the Liberal opposition in parliament announced that it will initiate a vote of no confidence later on Friday.
