Bulgarian Central Bank Governor Ivan Iskrov on Thursday denied allegations claiming he had agreed to step down on June 19 to open the way for the election of his successor.

“No one has been authorised to make any statements on behalf of the BNB governor.”, the central bank said in a statement.

BGNES media outlet quoted the head of the parliament’s budget and finance committee, Menda Stoyanova, as saying earlier on Thursday that Iskrov had allegedly said he would resign on June 19.

The statement came in response to the allegations of Stoyanova and her attempts to exert pressure on the independent institution.

The statement reminded that Iskrov has repeatedly announced that he expects a political agreement on the election of new governor to be reached, which should comply with the respective legislative procedures.

BNB expressed hope that the extraordinary energy and aggression of the politicians will transform into socially beneficial and constructive actions.

The governor of BNB did not participate into behind the scenes agreements and would not allow to be involved in confrontation between the institutions.

The statement also dismissed the allegations of Stoyanova as constituting a demonstration of power and pressure over the independent BNB.
