A monument in honor of the Bulgarian Medieval Tzar Samuil will be opened in the very heart of Sofia - near Saint Sofia basilica, approximately 50 meters away from the Saint Alexandar Nevsky monument.

The ready figure was presented unofficially Wednesday in front of Deputy Mayor Todor Chobanov and Chair of the ''Bulgarian Memory'' Foundation, Milen Vrabevski.

It was in fact the foundation that raised all the BGN 100,000 for the construction and design of the monument.

Twenty one proposals were reviewed prior to the final selection of a sculptor - Aleksandar Haitov, and designers Rosen Gurkov and Mariya Gurkova.

The statue itself is 4 meters high and will be placed upon a 2.2-meter high pedestal.

The initiative has been organized to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of the death of Tzar Samuil, and was supported by the Sofia Municipality.
