Bulgaria, Romania to Order Expensive Medicines Jointly as of end-2015

Bulgaria and Romania will start ordering jointly expensive pharmaceuticals in end-2015 in a bid to secure lower prices through larger quantities, according to Health Minister Petar Moskov.

Moskov made clear Saturday that the two countries would try to persuade other European countries to join the pharmaceutical union at a later stage.

He noted that supplies of mass medication would be negotiated by the Health Ministry, adding that the authorities would seek the lowest price possible.

Bulgaria’s Health Minister, as cited by Darik radio, admitted that the Ministry would buy generic drugs.

He declared that by changing the policy on pharmaceuticals he was opposing a business worth BGN 1 B in unwisely spent funds.

Moskov also said that Bulgaria’s National Health Insurance Fund would only sign contracts with hospitals that could offer comprehensive treatment to patients.

He pointed out that the option of privatizing some hospitals would b brought back on the agenda.

Moskov also explained that patients would only be allowed to make additional payments for treatment via health insurance funds and they would not be able to pay hospitals directly.
