Bulgarian Movie Viktoria Released in the US

The film Viktoria by director and writer Maya Vitkova has been selected for a US release by the company Big World Pictures, located in Brooklyn, New York, the Hollywood Reporter announced.

The official premiere of the movie was at the Sundance Film Fetsival. In fact, this is mreley the second Bulgarian movie selected for a US release over the course of the past thirty years.

Apart form Sundance, the film has also been shown at the AFI Fest, SIFF, Chicago and RiverRun festivals across the ocean.

Viktoria has had a fair share of critical acclaim after securing the Breaking Waves prize from the Hungarian festival,the Youth Jury Award at the 7th OFF PLUS CAMERA International Festival Of Independent Film in Krakow as well as the critics award at the 13th Transilvania International Film Festival.

The plot itself revolves around three generations of women during the last years of Bulgaria's socialist history.

 

The protagonist Viktoria was born at the very end of the so-called communism era and has been proclaimed '' baby of the decade'', as she had no naval at birth. In the words of the movie creators, the story is about the complicated mother-daughter relationships set in a time of totalitarian rule.

Meanwhile, Big World Pictures director Jonathan Howell said that in his opinion the movie is very personal and at the same time universal, demonstrating a natural feel to all the elements of the film making process.
