A section of Bulgaria’s Maritsa motorway linking Harmanli and Dimitrovgrad was officially opened on Thursday, bTV station reported.

The section, Lot 2 of Maritsa motorway, is 34.2 kilometres long. Its construction took three and a half years to complete. The cost of construction works is BGN 146 M (EUR 73 M) funded through the EU’s Operational Programme Transport 2007-2013 and Bulgarian government go-financing.

Maritsa motorway is part of pan-European transport Corridor IV linking northern Europe with Turkey and the Middle East. It also provides a connection to Trakia motorway that connects Bulgaria’s border with Serbia with the country’s Black Sea coast.

Lot 1 of Maritsa motorway, the 31-kilometre long section between Orizovo and Dimitrovgrad, is expected to be completed in October, Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski said in a statement.
