Bulgaria backs the idea to send an EU Special Representative to Macedonia in a bid to solve the political crisis in the country, according to Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov.

Mitov made clear in a Thursday interview for the Bulgarian National Radio that Bulgaria had stated its support for the initiative put forth by Germany a long time ago.

“Bulgaria, Germany, and the Netherlands backed a greater commitment of all European institutions to the solution of the political crisis in Macedonia. Sending an EU Special Representative is one attempt to find an instrument through which to enhance the EU’s commitment to Macedonia. Even if this fails to happen there are already a number of special representatives there. This does not mean that we will not look for other mechanisms to strengthen the European institutions in Skopje,” he declared.

Mitov was adamant that Bulgarian diplomacy would actively support the efforts to find a solution to the political crisis in Macedonia.

“It is necessary to step up the presence of EU foreign ministers and representatives, be it individually or through clusters of states. There must be clarity on the implementation of reforms which are compatible with Macedonia’s EU accession intentions. We are currently witnessing a backtracking on these reform plans,” Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister noted.

He also explained that the EU Special Representative to a country was usually selected by a country which had no common borders with the country where an issue had to be solved.

Bulgaria is the most active country for attracting attention to the EU institutions and NATO to the political crisis there,” he declared
