Bulgarian Border Police Officer Detained for Trafficking of Immigrants

A Bulgarian border police officer from the Lesovo border checkpoint was detained for the trafficking of immigrants over the border with Turkey.

The detention was the joint effort of the Interior Ministry and the State Agency for National Security (DANS) under the guidance of the regional prosecutor's office in Elhovo.

The detained officer let two Iraqi citizens to pass through the border with Turkey into Bulgaria on Saturday without the permission of authorities, the prosecutor's office informs.

The policeman used his personal vehicle for perpetrating the crime, concealing the two foreigners at the back of his car.

The police officer and the two foreigners were detained, the site of the crime was investigated, while the two Iraqi citizens were interrogated before a judge with the mediation of an interpreter.

Another three migrant traffickers were detained in a joint operation of the Interior Ministry and DANS in Sofia on Friday.

This was a continuation of the special operation of the authorities against illegal human trafficking, held on May 20 in Sofia, when sixty illegal immigrants were detained.
