Russia Set on Developing Its Own Mobile OS

Following the allegations made by Edward Snowden aimed at the US government claiming that it has ''back doors'' into virtually any known operating system, other world powers have started looking for alternatives.

In the situation of constant political tensions, the Russian Minister of Communications and Mass Media, Nikolai Nikiforov has announced that Russian government will be creating its very own mobile operating system. In his words, it will be developed in cooperation with Jolla, the co-creator of the Linux-based Sailfish OS. Jolla has been originally created by former Nokia employees. The project is based in Finland, but is sponsored by Russian and Chinese investors.

Nikiforov further explained on his Twitter profile that the new OS is joint project of Finland, China and Russia. Russian authorities revealed that they are expecting for Brazil, India and South Africa to also join the project. He, however, did not reveal the working title of the new system, but mentioned that it will be completely independent from all pre-existing versions of Sailfish OS.

Nikiforov noted that 95% of mobile phones in Russia currently rely on ''imported'' OS, such as Android and iOS. He expressed a firm hope that by 2025 the number will be decreased to 50%.
