Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg, the respective leaders of Britain’s Labour Party and Liberal Democrats, have announced their resignations following disappointing results of their parties at Thursday’s general election.

Miliband said he would step down after the Victory in Europe Day commemorations later on Friday and that his deputy Harriet Harman would be interim Labour leader.

Even though Nick Clegg retained his parliamentary seat in the vote, albeit with a reduced majority, he announced his resignation.

"I always expected this election to be exceptionally difficult for the Liberal Democrats given the heavy responsibilities we have had to bear in government in the most challenging of circumstances,” Clegg said.

Nigel Farage announced he is quitting as leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) earlier on Friday.
