Today is the turn for politicians to take responsible decisions on the future of Bulgarian armed forces.

The statement was made by Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev in his speech at the military parade taking place in Sofia. Traditionally, the event is organized in honor of St George, believed to be the guardian of the army.

The President added that a large agreement has been reached at the advisory council to the institution regarding the need for modernization.

Starting 2016, spending in the sector of defense will be increasing gradually until it reaches 2% of GDP in 2014. The main goal will be for Bulgaria to become more compatible with its NATO partners.

‘’Today we commemorate all soldiers who tragically died in military operations abroad,’’ Plevneliev added. ‘’ We are sending a greeting to our noble veterans and the brave Bulgarian soldiers that are performing their duties in order to secure the sovereignty and territorial unity of our country.’’

Additional, twenty-three urns full of land from the battlefields of the Second World War will be given to the Bulgarian Military Academy.

The President further reminded that no Bulgarian flag has ever been captured by foreign armies and that Bulgarians should be proud of their rich history and traditions.
