Some 48% of Bulgaria's 7.2 million people live in "material deprivation" with 7.8% of them being the so-called "working poor", AFP reminds citing an EU-wide survey.

according to Business Insider, an online news outlet which has run the story of AFP.

The author, Diana Simeonova, met Katia Kolesheva, a 49-year-old chemical engineer who falls into that category.

Together with her husband they manage to earn about BGN 950 (EUR 485), which should be enough for them and their son, aged 24. After paying their monthly installment and a loan on bills, only BGN 200-220 remain for food.

Telling their story, AFP also reminds that one in five Bulgarians is described as "relatively poor" by national statistics.

"Experts say that the situation is the legacy of successive governments after the end of communism in 1990 failing to implement reforms to make the economy more competitive and attract investment," Simeonova concludes.
