The Duchess of Cambridge Catherine Middleton was admitted to hospital on Saturday in the early stages of labour.

She was admitted to the Lindo Wing of the St Mary's Hospital in west London, where she gave birth to her first child, Prince George, in July 2013.

Kensington Palace informed that the labour was progressing normal for the duchess, who was taken to the hospital by car and accompanied by her husband Prince William, the BBC reports.

Officials said that the prince and the duchess did not know the gender of their unborn child, who will be fourth in the order of succession to the British throne.

British Prime Minister David Cameron was excited of the news, wished the family success and expressed hope of a healthy and happy outcome.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Labour leader Ed Miliband expressed similar wishes to the family.

Media and royal fans have gathered outside the hospital in anticipation of the birth, which will be announced in an email to the press, followed by a post on Twitter.

Catherine went on maternity leave on March 27, when she carried out her last official public engagement.
