Sofia Court Approves Dismantling of 1300 Years Bulgaria Monument

The Administrative Court Sofia City has given the green light to the removal of the “1300 Years Bulgaria” Monument in front of the National Palace of Culture (NDK) in Sofia.

The Court has decided it will not pursue the complaint of sculptor Valentin Starchev against the decision of the Sofia Municipal Council for the removal of the monument.

The Court has also decided to not pursue six other complaints lodged by citizens and civil society organizations, according to sources close to the Sofia Municipality, as cited by Sega daily.

The complaint submitted by the author of the monument, Valentin Starchev, in early 2015, is overruled because the monument has been public property since its creation.

According to the ruling, the court has been property of the Sofia Municipality for several years, which means that it can decide on its future.

Starchev based his complaint on a breach of intellectual property rights and demanded that the decision of the Sofia Municipal Council be declared null and void.

According to the decision of the Sofia Municipal Council from end-2014, the sculpted figures on the monument are to be moved to the Museum of Socialist Art in Sofia and in its place the memorial plaques of 1st and the 6th Sofia Infantry Regiments are to be restored.
