The Russian Justice Ministry revoked the registration of the Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny's Party of Progress on Tuesday.

The ministry decided to declare the document of the party's state registration invalid and to exclude information on the party and its structural divisions from the Uniform State Register of Legal Entities.

According to legislation, a party has to carry out state registration of its regional branches in at least half of Russia's constituent regions within six months of its state registration, which in the case of Navalny's party was 19 February 2014.

Party representatives informed the Justice Ministry in October 2014 that 44 regional branches had been registered, but only sixteen of them within the required six-month period.

The party appealed to the courts to overrule the verdict of the ministry's territorial departments as invalid.
