Bulgaria is experiencing a shortage of 40 000 Information Technology (IT) specialists, while the respective figure in Europe is one million people.

This was announced by the chief executive officer of the Bulgarian Association of Information Technologies (BAIT) Vesela Kalacheva at a conference on Tuesday.

The presence of unemployed IT cadres hinted of discrepancy between their qualification and the expectations of the employers.

According to the Deputy Labour Minister Galab Donev, a minimum standard of competencies for practicing the profession should be introduced.

Donev called on the IT firms to identify the competencies, which a person should possess in order to be employed in the sector.

The founder of Imperia Online Dobroslav Dimitrov revealed how a company could prepare the cadres it needs on its own.

In the first such initiative of the company, forty people underwent an intensive four-month free training and twenty of them were employed.

Although part of the company's interns have graduated in completely different degrees, they had managed to successfully obtain the skills required for their new occupation.
