Trips of Bulgarians Abroad Rise 1.6% Y/Y in March

The trips of Bulgarian residents abroad rose by 1.6% on the year in March, reaching 318,300, the country’s statiscics office NSI announced on Monday.

Spain led the list of countries that registered the largest increase in the number of visitors from Bulgaria (+16.9%), followed by Romania (+15%), the Czech Republic (+12.6%), Greece (+7.7%), Serbia (+6.9%) and Germany (+5.3%).

A drop of 9.5% in the number of Bulgarian residents who travelled to the United Kingdom was recorded in March. Austria followed with a decrease of 9%, Italy (-8.2%), Belgium (-7.9%), Macedonia (-7.1%), France (-5.4%), Turkey (-5.3%).

The trips for the purpose of visiting relatives and friends, for education purposes or for attending cultural and sports events accounted for half of all trips by Bulgarian residents abroad in March 2015. Trips for professional purposes followed with 28.2% of the total, and trips for holiday-making and recreation purposes came third with 21.8%.

Meanwhile, the number of visitors from abroad to Bulgaria increased by 2.6% year-on-year in March, reaching 370,500.

An increase was registered in the number of trips for professional purposes and for the purpose of visiting relatives and friends, education or cultural and sports events (+23.1% and + 9.5%, respectively), while the trips for holiday-making and recreation purposes dropped by 11.8%, the NSI said in a statement.
