Viktor Alexandrov has been sentenced to one year of imprisonment for the attempted arson of the Dzhumaya Mosque in Plovdiv on January 5.

The Plovdiv District Court used fast-track proceedings as the defendant pleaded guilty, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio.

Alexandrov told the judge panel that he had been drunk and that he could not remember the act but he regretted it.

On the night of January 5, Alexandrov poured nearly 3 liters of gasoline over the joinery of the mosque, then set it ablaze and ran away.

The fire was extinguished by a security guard and the perpetrator was arrested at a filling station after stealing fuel which he had planned to use to repeat the arson attempt.
