Rumen Rusanov from the Reformist Bloc (RB) became the new mayor of the Nedelino municipality in the region of Smolyan after his predecessor was removed from office.

The municipal council of Nedelino elected Rusanov at an extraordinary meeting on Friday, the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) reports.

Ten out of thirteen municipal councilors were present, with eight of them voting in favour of Rusanov, while the remaining two abstained.

The Plovdiv Appellate Court upheld on Thursday the decision for the removal of the former mayor Stoyan Beshirov, who had been charged with malfeasance in office.

Beshirov was accused of failure to fulfill his duties and violation of the Public Procurement Act, which resulted in damages to the municipal budget amounting to nearly BGN 1 M.

The deputy-mayor Fanka Georgieva, who had been appointed by Beshirov as interim, was also removed from office.
