Explosions have been heard from warehouses of the VMZ Sopot military plants near the village of Iganovo, Central Bulgaria, officials say.

There have been so far no reports of injured people, though official information is not yet available.

The first signals were submitted to police at 07:23 EEST (05:23 GMT), according to public broadcaster BNT and private national NOVA TV station, which both cite the Ministry of Interior.

It is not yet clear whether the explosions were controlled or not, given that a sapper squad with the Defense Ministry was recently tasked with defusing munitions around the Iganovo warehouses following the blasts which rocked one of the compounds in March.

Those developments resulted in no-one being killed or wounded, but for the local population were reminiscent of similar incidents at the VMZ Sopot plant in 2012, when three were wounded, and a huge blast dating back to 1978, when two died, 22 000 were evacuated and thousands of windows throughout the region were left shattered.
