An Egyptian court confirmed the death sentence of the Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammed Badie and thirteen others for planning attacks against the state.

The court also sentenced a US-Egyptian citizen and several others to life imprisonment, the BBC reports.

The sentence of Badie, who is also involved in several other trials, is subject to appeal.

Hundreds of people have been sentenced to death after the removal of President Mohammed Morsi in 2013 and the crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood, which followed suit.

The sentences are the final phase in the trial, which accused the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood in encouraging members of the group to confront the state and spread chaos.

The sentences were issued in line with the advice from Egypt's highest Islamic legal official - the Grand Mufti.
