After publishing an article on the less well-known national parks across Europe, The Guardian received hundreds of responds regarding some other worthwhile destinations.

As a result, the publication issued a reader's edition to the same list, this time featuring Bulgaria's very own Pirin.

In the words of traveller Eilert Ottem, the park is “spectacular, for its jagged mountain peaks that rise to 3,000 metres, its pristine lakes and ponds and its fantastic wildlife. I’d certainly go back, urbanised rock musician that I am.”

The tourist further showed detailed knowledge of the area: “A good starting place is Dobrinishte, a peaceful town near Bansko. A nice end point would be the popular wine town of Melnik, near the lovely Rozhen monastery.”

Among the other notable destinations that made the list were:

Plitvice Lakes in Croatia

Parque Natural Sierras de Cazorla in Spain

Helvetinj?rvi (meaning Hell’s lake) in Finland

Durmitor in Montenegro

Bia?owie?a forest, located in Belarus and Poland

Caldera de Taburiente on the Canary Islands

Monti Sibillini in Italy

Butrint in Albania

Vatnaj?kull in Iceland
