At least 54 people died after a Russian trawler sank off the Kamchatka Peninsula.

The Dalniy Vostok freezer trawler had 132 people on board when it sank, according to reports of the Tass news agency and the BBC News.

63 people have been rescued and 15 are still missing.

The rescue operation, which is still underway, includes over 20 ships and a helicopter.

Seventy-eight of the crew were Russian, with the remainder coming from countries including Ukraine, Myanmar and Vanuatu.

According to preliminary information, as cited by Interfax, drifting ice might have damaged the vessel.

Meanwhile, Tass quotes a senior official of the Kamchatka region as saying that the crew might have violated safety rules by exceeding the cargo limits.
