The chief of Romania's National Integrity Agency (ANI) Horia Georgescu has been taken into custody by prosecutors of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) on Monday.

Georgescu was transferred to the detention facility of Bucharest prison after having been heard at the DNA office, AGERPRES news agency reports.

The anticorruption chief is accused of abuse in office before taking his current position at ANI, the body which checks the compatibility and declarations of assets of Romanian public officials.

Prior to that, Georgescu served as member of the Central Commission for Compensations within the National Authority for Property Restitution.

This development comes as Romania's Finance Minister Darius Valcov resigned after he was accused in corruption during his mandate as mayor of the town of Slatina.
