Seven US Marines and four aircrew are missing after a military helicopter crashed during a training exercise at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.

Eglin spokesman Andy Bourland said that the Marines were part of Camp Lejeune-based special operations group and the aircrew were from a Hammond, Louisiana-based National Guard unit.

The helicopter was reported missing on Tuesday and rescue and search teams found debris from the crash early on Wednesday, the USA Today reports.

Search and rescue teams continue to be operating at the site of the crash, which is a remote beach owned by the military and used for test missions.

A second helicopter, which was also involved in the night training exercise, returned to the base safely.

The incident follows a mid-air collision between two helicopters near Villa Castelli in Argentina on Tuesday, which left eight French nationals, among them three sport stars, and two Argentinians dead.
