More than 100 Bulgarian intellectuals, politicians and public  figures have launched an initiative aimed at fully utilizing the international authority of Bulgaria’s last King and former Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to the country's benefit.

The organizers of the initiative, most of them linked to the NDSV party founded by Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in 2001, denied it is aimed at bringing  the former prime minister to the forefront of Bulgarian politics ahead of the presidential elections due next year.

The appeal to the Bulgarian public has been supported by 113 signatures so far. It is open to signing by all Bulgarian nationals.

According to Ognyan Gerdzhikov, a former Speaker of Parliament during Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha’s term as prime minister (2001-2005), Bulgaria should make its former prime minister a special envoy, throwing its support behind him to fully capitalize on his potential and experience.

Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha could efficiently promote major national causes such as the admission of Bulgaria into the European Union’s borderless Schengen zone, BTA state news agency quoted Gerdzhikov as saying at the inauguaral press conference in Sofia on Monday.

The Bulgarian state could meet faster some of its national objectives if it makes use of the capacity and potential of Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, opined Stanimir Ilchev, a journalist and a former member of the European Parliament from NDSV.

According to Ilchev, Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha could undertake missions as a special envoy of the government and parliament of his country as well as help Bulgaria develop key sectors such as cultural exchange between nations, tourism and investment promotion.
