Over 1,000 Old Cars Rotting in Sofia

Close to 1,000 old cars that are no longer suitable for driving, are rotting on the streets of Sofia. This contributes to the already heavy traffic in the capital.

All cars that don't have up-to-date registration plates and that have not undergone technical inspections over the past two years are considered to be no longer used.

''The owners of 963 trashed vehicles have already received warning stickers on their front windows to the fact that they will be removed involuntarily. The owners could move their vehicles to a private owned location up to three months upon receiving the notification,'' said Polina Asenova in an interview for Pressa Daily.

Meanwhile, after the vehicles are eventually forcefully removed from municipal locations, the owners will have the opportunity to take them back in 14 days. In case they don't show up, the cars will be smashed and deposited for scrap metal.

In a mass action in Burgas several years ago, 700 parking spots in the city center were made available after the removal of old cars. Varna is in a similar situation with 1,354 warning notes, while Plovdiv's number remains much lower -120.

Over the past five years, inspectors from the Sofia municipality have identified close to 6,000 unused vehicles. As a result, 4,461 owners have reacted and removed them voluntarily, 119 have undergone technical check-ups and 428 vehicles have been destroyed.
