According to unconfirmed information, there already is a suspect held on account of the murder of 23-year old student Viktoriya Zdravkova in Veliko Tarnovo.

The local Police Office is currently investigating a man under the nickname Slona (The Elephant) who most probably also has an accomplice, NOVA TV reported. It is believed that the reason for the murder has been theft.

Zdravkova was coming back home from work on February 28, and was crossing a bridge using a dangerous shortcut with no street lights. She has been reported missing on March 1, after her parents made a number of attempts to get hold of her.

Police officers and firefighters have been involved in the search operation, and her body was eventually found in Yantra River, near the area of the local railway station on March 3.

Citzens have been protesting in Veliko Tarnovo over the past few days demanding that the municipality should install street lightning in the area.

''This route is often used by students, so we demand that preventative measures are taken in order to avoid further tragedies,'' said Petko Ganchev, one of the organizers of a petition submitted to local authorities.

The civil committee also made a proposal for a police car to patrol the dangerous area.

The Veliko Tarnovo University announced a Day of Mourning in honor of Zdravkova, who was a student there.
