US Secretary of State noted impressive improvement that the Bulgarian nation has went through since the official liberation from the Ottoman Empire was announced on March 3 1878.

The announcement was made in a congratulatory letter on the holiday.

Curiously enough, instead of using the English term ''democracy'', Kerry chose the Bulgarian word ''demokratsiya''.

He further mentioned the wall writings at the St. Georgi temple in Sofia, as well as the center of town that he compared to Dorothy's yellow brick road from the children's classic Wizard of Oz.

Kerry congratulated Bulgaria on the independence celebrations on behalf of US President Barack Obama and the US people.

Additionally, he said that the US commitment to Bulgaria remains strong, and that the victims of the Balkan country in the NATO peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan and Iraq are remembered and appreciated.

Kerry added that the bilateral cooperation in the fields of defense and security, energy diversification, rule of law, educational exchange, as well as cultural preservation needs to be further strengthened.
