"Trilateral gas talks Russia-Ukraine-Commission confirmed," Anna-Kaisa-Itkonen, a spokesperson of the European Commission for climate action and energy, wrote on Twitter.
Energy minister of both countries are to participate, with EU Commission Vice President for Energy Union Maros Sefcovic, who offered to broker a new agreeement earlier this week. Formally the invitation was sent on Thursday.
The latest developments follow a renewal of tensions between Russia and Ukraine over non-payment of Naftogaz's debt to Gazprom. Earlier this week the Russian energy giant even warned it could stop gas flow to Ukraine (and even to Europe) as the country's energy utility had failed to deliver on its installments.
Moscow introduced a prepayment system for Ukrainian gas supplies last June, and Kiev accepted the regime following a five-month dispute that ended in a deal also brokered by the EU.
