Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has demanded that Gen. Stoyan Tonev, an MP who heads the Healthcare Committee in Parliament, resign, media sources say.

On Monday Gen. Tonev came in the spotlight after an audit of the Defense Ministry in the Medical Military Academy, a medical institution he headed between 2002 and 2013.

Private bTV station reported earlier on Monday Borisov had demanded that he leave all his offices as part of the main governing GERB party. Borisov allegedly withdrew his political support from Tonev.

The document found out that while Tonev was running the facility, a private entity was functioning in it that generated BGN 10 M (EUR 5 M) in losses to the detriment of the state-owned institution.

Auditors cited by Dariknews suggest it is impossible to tell the difference between expenditures the academy and those of the private entity.

The audit itself was triggered after a TV investigation accused Tonev of violations, something Tonev called "manipulations".

Last year, before his election to Parliament in a snap poll, Tonev took over as Deputy Mayor of Sofia Municipality on healthcare issues.
