Hungary's Orban Loses Supermajority in Parliament

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban lost the supermajority in parliament after a by-election that took place on Sunday.

Zoltan Kesz, supported by Hungarian socialists, won the majority of votes with 43% against 34% for Orban's conservative Fidesz party.

The Hungarian PM's majority in parliament thus far has allowed him to execute a number of reforms in the judiciary, economy, and media, some of which have been largely criticized abroad.

The last project, received sceptically by the EU has been the nuclear power contract with Russia's Rosatom, signed last Tuesday. The company has contracted the building of two more units at the nuclear power plant in Paks, an activity worth EUR 12 B.

Both local and foreign opponents of the deal claim that Hungary needs diversification of its energy resources, especially having in mind the fact that 80% of oil and 60% of its gas imports come from Russia.

No official discard has been given to the project, however, Euratom is currently in the process of thoroughly examining the agreement. So is the European Commission, focusing its attention on state subsidies and legality of contracts between Hungary and Russia.
