Birdman is Film of the Year at Oscars 2015

Birdman, directed by Alejandro Gonz?lez I??rritu and The Grand Budapest Hotel were neck in neck at the 87th Academy Awards ceremony.

Birdman, however, snatched two of the most prestigious film awards - best director and and best picture, as well as best original screenplay and best cinematography.

Alexandre Desplat won for his original score for The Grand Budapest Hotel. The movie also took the awards for best makeup and hair styling, best costume design and best production design.

The box office hit, directed by Christopher Nolan, Interstellar won only in the visual effects category.

Among the happy winners at the Oscars were also fourth-time nominee Julianne Moore for her performance in Still Alice, first-timer Eddie Redmayne for his brilliant interpretation of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, and JK Simmons for best supporting actor in Whiplash.

Patricia Arquette was the sensation of the evening with her appeal for equal payment of men and women in show business, after winning the award for best supporting actress in Boyhood. Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lopez, sitting right next to each other enthusiastically applauded and screamed after.

The Imitation Game, despite being a favorite to many, did not win in any of the major categories, but took home only the award for best adapted screenplay.

Citizenfour won the award for best documentary feature. It tells the story of Edward Snowden, who went into hiding after leaking classified information from the US National Security agency to mass media. He now resides in Russia.

Poland's Ida won in the category of best foreign language film, and the best animated movie award went to box office hit Big Hero 6.
