Ukrainian authorities have detained a number of suspects in connection with a bomb attack in Kharkiv that left at least two people dead and 10 injured.

The explosion occurred at 13:20 local time as people were gathering near the city's Palace of Sport for a rally marking one year since the start of the Maidan protests in Kiev, according to reports of the BBC News.

The Interior Ministry described the blast as a terror attack and informed that one of the victims was a police officer.

Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, lies outside the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the rally held in Kiev over the anniversary of the Maidan protests and the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych was peaceful.

The procession, which was attended by thousands, passed through key sites of clashes between protesters and riot police on February 22, 2014.

The march in Kiev was attended by President Poroshenko and the presidents of Poland, Lithuania, Germany, Georgia, and the European Union.
