Ukraine's Foreign Minister Klimkin Expects EU Police To Secure Peace in Donbas

Ukraine is resolved on pursuing its demand for a deployment of a peacekeeping mission in Donbas. It will most probably be followed by a police mission of the European Union.

The announcement was made by Ukraine's Foreign Minsister Pavel Klimkin in an interview with local TV station, as reported by Tass information agency.

"Police will be invited eventually, after the suspension of hostilities to maintain order happens,'' he said. ''But at the present stage Ukraine needs peacekeepers, as their presence is a guarantee the compliance with the Minsk agreements."

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko made a proposal Thursday for EU and NATO peacekeeping missions to be deployed in the regions of high tensions.

In response, leaders of the self-proclaimed republics in Donetsk and Luhansk stated that they will be willing to accept peacekeeping forces only from Belarus or Russia.

Additionally, Kiev stopped the deliveries of gas for rebel-held eastern Ukraine, but Russia's Gazprom substituted the supplies almost immediately after.

Further consultations regarding tensions in Ukraine are expected to start on February 23 at the UN Security Council.
