Russian Rosatom to Start Building Two Units at Hungarian NPP

The Russian nuclear power corporation Rosatom will start the construction of two units at the Hungarian nuclear power plant (NPP) Paks in the spring.

This was announced by the chief executive of Rosatom Sergey Kiriyenko in Budapest on Tuesday, TASS news agency reports.

Kiriyenko assured that his company is to comply with all regulations and requirements, adding that the preparation of an environmental impact assessment and the obtaining of license were underway.

This news comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived on his official visit to Hungary, during which energy projects are expected to feature high on the agenda.

Putin started his visit to Hungary with the laying of wreaths at the Memorial to Soviet Soldiers in Budapest.

The Russian President is later to meet Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and President Janor Ader.

It is expected that the prolongation of the existing or signing of new contracts for gas supplies will be among the main issues of Putin's visit, which is the first to an EU leader since June 2014.

Around 2000 people gathered in a protest in Budapest on the eve of Putin's visit, the BBC reports.
