Tourism Minister Nikolina Angelkova has made clear that a register of tourist destinations in the country is being prepared.
Angelkova, as cited by the Bulgarian National Radio, informed Monday that seven tourism attaches would be tasked with boosting Bulgaria’s popularity abroad and developing potential markets.
She told journalists that a total of 160 Bulgarian municipalities had so far submitted information to the Tourism Ministry about nearly 2250 tourist attractions, with around half of them state-owned and the remainder either privately owned, or church property, or of an unclear status.
Angelkova pointed out that accessing some 250 tourist attractions was very difficult or impossible.
She said that the authorities would try to launch public consultation on the proposal to introduce entrance fees for each and every tourist attraction, with the revenues going to the maintenance of the respective site only.
Bulgaria’s Tourism Minister said that other tasks on the agenda of the Ministry were the consolidation of the sector and the clarification of the legal statute of national resorts.
She said that the seven tourism attaches would strive to make Bulgaria a year-round tourist destination, adding that they would be based in Frankfurt, Moscow, Romania, Turkey, Spain (covering Portugal and Andorra too), one of the Visegrad Group countries, and one of the Scandinavian countries.
Angelkova noted that the seat of the tourism attach? for the Visegrad Group had not been decided yet, the options being Warsaw or Prague.
She reminded that tourism generated 12-15% of the country’s GDP and suggested that the authorities had to seek to turn it into an industry.
