A first-of-a-kind meeting is due on Tuesday between Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov, newly-elected cassation court head Lozan Panov and Justice Minister Hristo Ivanov in Sofia.

Ivanov told reporters Monday that one of the main issues to be discussed was the management of the Sofia Court House, a building housing both the Sofia City Court and the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office, alongside other institutions.

The minister, however, also pointed to the event's importance on a broader level, saying it would set an example of cooperation between the executive and the judiciary.

The Chief Prosecutor and the Chair of the Supreme Court of Cassation (VKS), a post to which Lozan Panov was elected in end-January, are considered to be two of the "big three" in the judiciary, along with the Chief Judicial Inspector, an office that has been left vacant for more than a year.

"We have to make sure that we will carry out the reform pointed out, since its focus is precisely... boosting the independence of the judiciary," Dnevnik.bg quotes Ivanov as saying.

The meeting comes amid tensions between the executive and the judicial system, and also within the judiciary itself, with Ivanov's reform proposals being controversially perceived by magistrates.

Bulgaria has recently been under pressure to pursue changes in the judicial system after a new critical monitoring report from the EU.
