EIRI CEO Lyubomir Kyuchukov: Will Ukraine Peace Deal Hold?

There are at least two perspectives, from which one can consider the potential risks to the Ukraine ceasefire agreement and seek guarantees for its implementation, according to the CEO of Sofia-based NGO Economics and International Relations Institute (EIRI).

Commenting on the outcome of Minsk talks, Lyubomir Kyuchukov told the BNR radio station the first perspective is the internal Ukrainian one.

“According to me, first and foremost we should consider whether the two sides [to the conflict in eastern Ukraine] will be able to neutralize the extremists in their own ranks.”

Looking from another perspective, Kyuchukov added, it is important to strictly honour the clauses of the agreement. This perspective provides for the creation of a demilitarized zone, withdrawal of heavy weapons and all foreign formations and nationals from Ukraine’s territory and ensuring Ukraine’s full control of its border with Russia.

“Looking from an international point of view, it is very important to see what the reaction of those who are not part of the agreement will be. The United States, in the first place.”

It could be expected that America’s reaction will be positive, Kyuchukov opined.

“Kez issues include the sanctions [against Russia], the supply of arms to Ukraine, I would also mention the decrease in irresponsible statements by politicians from both sides. It was not by chance that I said provocations within the next two days carry the risk of derailing the agreement on the ground.”
