Bulgaria Needs No Legal Amendments for Hosting NATO Command Centre

Bulgarian Defence Minister Nikolay Nenchev announced that no legislative amendments are required for the hosting of the proposed NATO command centre in Sofia.

Nenchev said that there is no need for parliament to express its opinion on the future command centre, as this was required neither by the constitution nor by any other law.

Following his participation in the meeting of NATO's defence ministers on Thursday, Nenchev revealed that no new decisions have been taken at it, Darik radio reports.

The Defence Minister reminded a decision of the Constitutional Court, according to which Bulgaria has a right to hold on its territory joint actions and drills with its allies.

Nenchev expressed confidence that Bulgaria has readiness to establish the command centre.

The Defence Minister assured that NATO pursues a strictly defence policy and has no aggressive attitude towards any country.

Nenchev added that in the present environment of uncertainty, Bulgaria has to ensure its security, as the country is situated at crossroads with obvious problems.

The Defence Minister said that as a member of NATO, Bulgaria has to fulfill its commitments to its allies in every single respect.

It still remains unclear when the new command centre will start functioning and the means through which it will be funded.
