Romanians Object to Construction of New Unit at Bulgaria's Kozloduy NPP

The planned construction of a new unit at the Bulgarian nuclear power plant (NPP) Kozloduy is opposed to by Romanian citizens, who live on the opposite bank of the Danube river.

The citizens of the Romanian town Dabuleni, who claim to have long suffered from the radiation emitted by the NPP, expressed willingness to protest against the planned construction, according to an article published by Romania's Adevarul daily.

Bulgaria's sole NPP is located near the banks of the Danube river, less than four kilometres from the border with Romania.

The authorities of the Romanian Dolj County opined that such an investment would not be beneficial to the region.

Meanwhile, Bulgaria's Environment Ministry approved the environmental impact assessment (EIA) of the planned nuclear unit last week.

Bulgarian authorities assure that the project does not pose a threat to the citizens of southern Romania.

The only problem could occur in the event of an accident, which will affect 23 settlements situated on both banks of the river.
