Bulgaria Holds Day of National Mourning for Ex President Zhelyu Zhelev

Bulgaria holds a day of national mourning for late Bulgarian President Zhelyu Zhelev.

Zhelev, a dissident who served as Bulgaria’s first democratically elected president (1990-1997) after the fall of communism, passed away on Friday at the age of 79.

Bulgarian national flags at all state institutions will be flown at half-mast.

The commemorative service starts at 12 noon at the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and will be served by Patriarch Neofit, the head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, according to reports of dnevnik.bg.

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev will give a farewell speech.

The funeral service will be attended by the heads of state of Macedonia, Gjorge Ivanov, Albania, Bujar Nishani, Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga, and former Romanian President Emil Constantinescu.

The book of condolences will be available to be signed by citizens at the President's Office in Sofia as of 12 noon on Sunday.
