Three in Five Bulgarians Want Current Government to Complete Its Term - Poll

Sixty-one percent of Bulgarians believe the minority coalition government led by Prime Minister Boyko Borisov should complete its four-year term of office, a new survey showed on Thursday.

According to a poll among 1,026 Bulgarian nationals over the age of 18 conducted by Alpha Research January 15-23, trust in Borisov has increased to 32% as compared to 25% at the beginning of his term of office in November 2014. Thirty-seven percent gave a negative assessment of Borisov's performance, a decrease from about 50% in November.

Kristalina Georgieva, the European Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources, was the most trusted Bulgarian politician in the survey with 42% support and 21% disapproval. Thirty-seven percent said they had no opinion.

President Rosen Plevneliev has scored an approval rate of 29%, while 34% of respondents expressed a negative perception of his policies. Thirty-seven percent had no opinion.

After the tumultuous start of the cabinet’s term, now 43% of Bulgarians remain neutral about the Parliament’s activity, while 46% are pessimistic. 

When asked about their opinion of the current economic situation in Bulgaria, 53% of the respondents said it has worsened, while five percent said it has improved.

Fifty-six percent of those polled believe believe their household incomes will remain the same.

According to the survey, one of the least trusted sectors remains the judiciary, with 57% of respondents saying that if they became victims of a crime courts of law would impose just sentences on the perpetrators. Similarly, 52% don’t believe police will act adequately to discover the offenders.

The majority of respondents expressed their solidarity with the victims of the terror attacks on the offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris earlier this month with 62% opining that the freedom of speech should not be limited in any form.
