Bulgarian Appointed as Coach of Maldives National Football Team

The Bulgarian Velizar Popov was appointed as the head coach of the Maldives men's national football team on Wednesday.

Popov was presented at a special ceremony prior to the beginning of the President Cup's final, daily Dnevnik reports.

The Bulgarian is well-known in the Maldives, where he coached the New Radiant Sports Club between 2012 and 2013.

Under his guidance, New Radiant recorded victories in all the matches it played in the domestic tournaments in 2013, winning both the Dhivehi League and the FA Cup.

Popov also helped New Radiant to reach the quarterfinals of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup in 2013 with the best attacking record in the group stage of the tournament.

After these successes, Popov left for Oman, where he became coach of Sur Club, later going to Thailand to head Suphanburi.

His coaching career started in Bulgaria, where he headed the team of Cherno More between 2009 and 2010.
