Bulgaria lost EU funding of EUR 51.3 M under the Rural Development Program in 2014, according to Agriculture Minister Desislava Taneva.

In an interview for Pressa daily, Taneva explained that the final amount of the loss of funding under that program had been twice smaller than the preliminary forecast.

She informed that her colleagues from Bulgaria’s State Fund Agriculture had done their best to minimize the loss up until the last day of December.

Taneva, as cited by dnevnik.bg, underscored that Bulgaria had suffered EU funds losses over the past three years, adding that a total of EUR 91.5 M had been lost in 2011, 2012, and 2013.

She added that the state had also been imposed a penalty of EUR 60 M for violations established by audit bodies.

Bulgaria’s Agriculture Minister specified that the irregularities had been detected with the identification system for agricultural land and with public procurement procedures for municipal projects.

She said that agricultural administration would be reformed to expand the tasks and responsibilities of district units at the expense of national ones.
