Opinion polls show that Greek oppositional party SYRIZA is firmly in the lead before the early parliamentary elections that are to take place on January 25.

The ruling party of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras New Democracy comes second in the polls, Ekathimerini daily reports.

According to the Athens-based polling company Alco, SYRIZA will get 31.6 % of the votes at the forthcoming elections, while New Democracy will earn 28.6 %.

Although the lead of SYRIZA has narrowed with 3.3 % compared to the previous survey, that was published on 27 December 2014, its lead remains solid and it will be difficult for New Democracy to overcome it.

The CEO of Alco commented that both main parties have gained at the expense of their smaller rivals.

The party that is most likely to claim the third place Potami is far behind with 4.2 %.

Another poll from GPO predicts that SYRIZA will get 28.5 % of the votes, while New Democracy will earn 25.3 %.

According to a third poll by Pulse, SYRIZA will win the elections with 29 %, followed by New Democracy with 25.5 %.

All three polls show that the newly-established Movement of Democratic Forces, which split from PASOK in the beginning of the year, will remain below the electoral threshold of 3 %.

According to Alco, the party founded by former Prime Minister George Papandreou will get only 2.5 % of the votes.

Following three unsuccessful attempts to approve Stavros Dimas - the presidential candidate of Samaras, the Parliament was dissolved and early general elections were called.

SYRIZA and its leader Alexis Tsipras have gained increasing popularity due to being in favour of reducing the austerity measures and writing off some of Greece's debt.
