The unemployment rate in Bulgaria has decreased over the past year, but remains above the average for the European Union (EU).

This becomes clear from the data on unemployment in November 2014, published by Eurostat on Wednesday.

The unemployment rate in Bulgaria has recorded a steady decrease from November 2013, when it stood at 12.9 %, reaching 11.1 % a year later.

Eurostat estimates that the number of unemployed people in Bulgaria in November 2014 was 374 000, down from 435 000 a year earlier.

However the figure remains above the EU average, which was 10 % in November 2014.

The youth unemployment rate in Bulgaria also recorded a decrease from 27 % in November 2013 to 21.4 % a year later.

This amounts to 43 000 people, aged between 15 and 24, who were unemployed in November 2014.

The unemployment rate in Bulgaria has remained higher among men than women over the past year.

The data from Eurostat differs slightly from that of the Bulgarian National Employment Agency, which recorded an unemployment rate of 10.8 % in November 2014, daily Sega reports.

The difference comes from the methods which the two agencies use to calculate unemployment rates.

Eurostat assesses unemployment rate on the basis of economically active people, while the Bulgarian National Employment Agency uses the number of those registered as unemployed.

On the EU level, unemployment rate has recorded a drop in the past year, decreasing from 10.7 % in November 2013 to 10 % a year later.

Austria and Germany had the lowest unemployment rates in November 2014, while the highest were recorded in Greece and Spain.

The youth unemployment rate has also recorded a drop over the past year, decreasing from 23.2 % in November 2013 to 21.9 % a year later.

The lowest youth unemployment rates were observed in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands, while Spain, Greece, Croatia and Italy recorded the highest.
