The construction of the coastal station at Port Varna has been completed.

The coastal station will host an operations center which will manage vessel traffic (VTS Center Varna).

The center will monitor and direct ships north of Cape Emine and also engage in real-time information exchange with the coastal station in Burgas, according to reports of the maritime.bg portal.

The new building of the Varna-based coastal station will also host the Bulgarian operations center of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).

The GMDSS center in Varna will carry out all communications which Bulgaria has to carry out under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).

In the case of emergency situations in Varna, the activity of the center may be undertaken by the specially created workplace at the coastal station in Burgas.

Over the next few months, the aerial facilities and the radar system will be installed at the Varna-based coastal station.

The Varna-based unit will also be equipped with thermal imaging cameras and a meteorological surveillance station.

Under the Merchant Shipping Code, State Enterprise Port Infrastructure is in charge of building and maintaining the vessel traffic management system, as well as providing information service to ships.

The overall management of the vessel traffic management system is carried out by the special unit Vessel Traffic Management – Black Sea of the State Enterprise Port Infrastructure.

The construction of coastal stations providing information service to ships in Varna and Burgas is financed under operational program Transport 2007-2014.
